The Wound Care Certificate: Update for Chiropodists
Program Title: The Wound Care Certificate: Update for Chiropodists.
Audience: Members of the Ontario Society of Chiropodists who are looking for a refresher/review of current wound care practices, or those who would like to develop their wound care clinical skills.
Program Goal: This certificate program has been custom-designed for chiropodists to build their skill set of evidence-based and clinically-focused wound care practices. The program provides clinicians, who work hands-on with clients, up-to-date education on wound care that is relevant to their clinical setting—including assessment approaches, demonstration and practice with current products, and clinical case discussions/presentations.
CE Credits: Pending approval for 21 credits for continuing education activities under Category A (structure lecture style programs), which fulfills that component of the quality assurance program for re-registration with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. Credits can also be applied towards Category B (self-directed learning).
Program Provider: Health Leadership and Learning Network (HLLN), Faculty of Health, York University
Program Director: Rosemary Kohr - BA, BScN, MScN, PhD, RN Role of the Program Director • The Program Director is the primary developer of all of the new content. • She will finalize the program outline in consultation with the advisor from the Ontario Society of Chiropodists (OSC). • The Program Director will supervise all instruction and any guest speakers, and will be present as an observer for all of the instructional sessions.
Timeline: Dates and timeframe for program delivery • Three (3) day course • Two days delivered in-class over from 9 am - 4:30 pm each day (Friday - October 26 & Saturday - October 27), followed by three 2-hour evening webinar sessions from 7-9 PM (Tuesdays - November 13, 20, 27)
Class Size: 30 people maximum
Location: YorkU, Keele Campus
Core Principles: The course is designed for working chiropodist who work directly with clients treating wounds. The course will use applied and adult learning principles including case-based studies focusing on clinical realities and specific types of wound etiologies. Participants will engage in:
• Interactive presentations – participants will consolidate their understanding of the implications of the systems that impact on wound development and healing. • Hands-on opportunity with products (wound dressings) –participants will understand the rationale and gain confidence for appropriate dressing selection for all types of wounds • Group discussion of clinical cases - include use of photos and a template for assessment, treatment and evaluation, to improve approaches to support wound healing outcomes.
Learning Path: The curriculum is presented in an interactive, practical, and applied learning format to further evidence-based, patient-centred care. Module Learning Outcomes

Review of Fundamentals of Chronic wounds: Cause, Assessment and Treatment
Introduction to Wound Infections • Introduction/objectives (participants) • Skin & the healing cascade • Risk and effect of skin breakdown o Skin Tears o Pressure/ Decubitus Ulcers • Components of wound assessment and treatment (the ABCs of wound care) • Wound infection • Evidence-informed product selection
Reflection • Self-reflection about learning objectives • Submit cases that may be used for discussion
Webinar Sessions (Three 2-hour webinars)
Wound dressing selection and case examples • Focus on assessment, treatment and evaluation of chronic wounds • 2 case discussions per webinar (participants are encouraged to send and prepare to present a wound case) • Patient issues and educational needs • Community of Practice and Resources • Wrap-up
This is a certificate program issued by York University. The fee is $750. Registration is open to OSC members until July31. After this date non-members can register.
